These web pages display how Tobacco Products continue the era of supporting smoking as it was during World War I with the support of the Tobacco Fund. People donated money to buy the servicemen “smokes” for their “nerves”, which was endorsed by the medical journal and most physicians in an article dated October 18, 1917.
The articles, and mostly advertisements, reveal the continued attitudes that, over 20 years later, had only grown stronger in supporting smoking. Servicemen were shown smoking in newspaper advertisements as early as January 1942. Many of the camps overseas were named after cigarette brands.
